English Phonological Awareness of Chinese Children and Spelling (Article written in chinese)

DING Zhaopeng & PENG Danling

Abstract

This study investigated the development of English phonological awareness of Chinese children and its influence on English spelling. Results indicated that, (1) the development of phonological awareness of Chinese children was about the same as that of English speaking children. Rhyme awareness developed earlier than phonemic awareness. However, owing to the impact of Chinese phonology, it was easier for Chinese children than for English children to detach the end phoneme from the preceding vowel of CVC. (2) Rhyme awareness was significantly correlated with CVC spelling, and rhyme and phonemic awareness were correlated with CCVC spelling even after controls for differences in sex, pinyin, RAVEN, English letter name knowledge and English vocabulary. Chinese children at low level of phonological awareness can spell novel words by analogy. (3) Chinese children used pinyin to help them spell English words.
