Eye Movements in Recognition of Rotated Chinese Characters (Article written in chinese)

WU Bing & SUN Fuchuan

Abstract

To investigate the role and mechanism of mental rotation in recognizing rotated Chinese characters, the recognition processes of both rotated Chinese characters and texts by means of eye-movement experiments were studied. The results demonstrated that recognition time and number of fixations required to recognize rotated Chinese character linearly increased with their angular deviation to upright direction. These eye-movement data indicated that the mental rotation process existed in recognition of rotated Chinese. The comparison of results from text reading experiments, in which four modes of characters rotating were adopted, showed that both image and frame rotation were operated in the processing of mental rotation.
