Abstract
The time course of graphic, phonological and semantic activation during high-frequency Chinese character recognition was investigated in two priming-category judgment tasks based individually on semantic, phonological information. The two experiments showed that the order of accessing lexical information of high-frequency Chinese characters is (1) graphic, (2) semantic, (3) phonological. The results suggested the meaning of high-frequency Chinese characters can be accessed directly by the activation of graphic information. Phonology may be activated automatically, but it may take place after the access of character meaning.
