Abstract

Within the elementary math curriculum, fraction is closely related to decimal, percentage, ratio, and division. And these concepts are among the important concepts that elementary students must learn. There is much domestic research on the concept of fraction for elementary students. There is, however, a lack of assessment tools with decent reliability and validity for the concept of fraction. The purpose of this research is to design an assessment to measure the understanding of the concept of fraction for 5th and 6th graders, namely “The rating scale of fraction for 5th and 6th graders”. The sample for this study was drawn from Taiwan through multistage sampling. The sample contained a total of 2612 students from 5th and 6th grade. The rating scale of fraction for 5th and 6th graders was analyzed using common factor analysis and it includes three sub-concepts of fraction: the concept of equal dividing, the concept of unit, and equivalent fraction. The internal coherence reliability was determined for each sub rating scale and the overall rating scale. Content validity and constructive validity were also established.

The results show that “the rating scale of fraction for 5th and 6th graders” has satisfactory reliability and validity.

Keywords: fraction; 5th and 6th graders; common factor analysis; the rating scale of fraction
