Ching-Yi CHANG

Abstract

The purpose of this case study was to investigate the methods, thinking sources, outcomes, and motivational strategies of a science teacher “Miss Dai”. The methods of data collection included the following: observation in the classroom, interviews with teachers (Miss Dai and her colleague Mr. Lin) and students, a student survey, and analysis of other related documents. We used “ARCS (Attention, Relevance, Confidence and Satisfaction) Model of Motivational Design” to analyze the teaching strategies of this science teacher and used the “Instructional Material Motivation Survey” to analyze the outcomes. The research found that Miss Dai taught using 5E learning cycles and there were many motivational strategies in each step of the 5E cycle. The analysis revealed 5 motivational strategies in 4 major categories that could be used in elementary science teaching.
