Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop a web based learning environment instrument using insights gained from project based learning and knowledge integration. The instrument contained five subscales: access, interaction, response, structure and integration and was used to evaluate the design of the web based learning environment to promote the knowledge integration of project based learning. In order to enhance the validity of this instrument, two e-learning experts and one course instruction expert were invited to review the instrument. Due to the limitations of web based courses at the college level, data were gathered from college students in a project based course taught by one of the authors with project based learning. The initial number of subjects for the pre-test was 187, and the final version of the instrument contained 39 items. The number of subjects in the post test was 176; using the confirmatory factor analysis to establish construct validity of the instrument with the structured equation model using the item parcels method. By utilizing confirmatory factor analysis to examine the measurement model, goodness of fit was confirmed to be reliable. The Cronbach’s alpha reliability for the entire instrument was .962 and the Cronbach’s alpha reliability for each of the 5 subscales ranged from .769 to .901. We also designed five open-ended questions for the instrument to collect the subjects’ awareness and preferences of the web based project learning environment. The results of content analysis found that; the accessibility, interaction and integration characteristics were the main concerns of the learners in using a web course. Findings of this study confirmed the validity and reliability of the web based learning environment instrument. Thus, showing that it is a useful instrument to evaluate web based learning environments.
