Abstract
We introduce a new instruction strategy called Distant Cooperative Design which can be employed in a distance learning environment. We first give the background and motivation for this new strategy. Next, we discuss the theoretical basis for developing Distant Cooperative Design, including cooperative learning and constructivism. We then list and explain the steps to realize this promising learning strategy. The introduction and discussion are based on three distant instructional systems: Collaborative Visualization at Northwestern University, Center for Design Research at Stanford University, and the CORAL environment at National Chiao Tung University.
