Cultural Minorities Services as Gateway to Information

Linda TSE

Abstract

Cultural Minorities Services of Montgomery County (Maryland) Department of Public Libraries (MCDPL) was established in 1986 through a three-year Library Service and Construction Act (LSCA) Grant to serve the Chinese, Hispanic, Korean, and Vietnamese populations, the four fastest growing cultural/language minorities in Montgomery County. Its mission is to promote library services and to make library materials and general information more accessible to the four cultural minorities populations. In the past ten years, Cultural Minorities Services has reached out to the Chinese, Hispanic, Korean and Vietnamese populations through a bilingual staff, native language collections, multilingual library printed materials, and culture programs.
