Collaborative Learning in the College Classroom: Building Knowledge with Teamwork and Technology

Anthony K. BYRD & Yvette S. HARMAN

Abstract

The standard lecture teaching methodology is familiar to each of us. College faculty rely on this approach for that very reason: it’s familiar, it’s relatively easy to prepare, and we’ve been doing it for years. However, students tend to remember what they do, rather than what they hear. Consequently, various forms of “active learning” teaching pedagogies are attracting considerable attention at the college level. At a recent workshop sponsored by the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning at the University of Central Florida, the first author discussed a method of incorporating teaching and technology in the classroom. We have found this method to be effective with large sections of more than 250 students. This approach can also be used successfully with small classes. With some advanced preparation, faculty can create more interesting and effective courses for students.
