Abstract
This paper introduce several attempts by those concerned with the preservation of ancient Chinese books to establish a union catalogue of ancient books. The U.S. Research Libraries Group pioneered in establishing a union catalogue of rare and ancient books. At present, Taiwan is in the process of establishing a union catalogue of rare ancient books. In addition, mainland China has been preparing a digital catalogue of ancient Chinese books for the past several years. Its is clear that both in Taiwan and abroad, there is a common awareness of the necessity to establish a cooperative catalogue of ancient books. Standardization is an important factor in cooperative cataloguing. It needs to the establish and implement appropriate and common standards to maintain a efficiency union catalogue of Chinese rare and ancient books.
