Benjamin HU

Abstract

With the explosive growth of the digital information on the Web, librarians are facing tremendous challenges of how to manage, organize, and retrieve effectively and efficiently the information resources on the Web. This article offers an overview of some of the latest endeavors made by the librarianship. These developments include the coordinated effort to integrate the traditional standard tools of USMARC with 856 field (the Remote Location and Access); the validation program of PURL developed to achieve a persistent URL database that can be maintained and updated; the innovation of Dublin Core metadata as the new solution for effectively managing and accessing the digital information on the Web; and Yahoo!’s new classification system, the largest Web directory, which helps users follow the subject hierarchy into more specific subcategories until desired links are found.
