Surviving the Information Explosion: Training paraprofessionals for Reference Service

Art A. LICHTENSTEIN

Abstract

The author proposes that training paraprofessionals for routine, reference desk service is an inexpensive way for libraries to free up professionals so they may pay attention to complicated tasks such as long range planning, policy making, and sophisticated information retrieval. In designing this training, librarians should not attempt to provide paraprofessionals with a capsulized understanding of library and information science. Rather they should customize the training for an individual library, focusing narrowly on the specific questions that are likely to come up and on the readily available information sources that will serve to answer them. Also, it is critical to present the training in a style that is upbeat and appropriately entertaining.
