Outsourcing to OCLC: Three Cataloging Projects of the university of Dayton’s Marian Library

Susan L. TSUI & Cecilia MUSHENHEIM

Abstract

This article reviews and describes in detail the procedures of three cataloging projects outsourced with OCLC for a rare book collection of over 10,000 items and a backlog of 30,000 additional titles in the Marian Library of the University of Dayton, a research library focused on Mary, the mother of Jesus. The rare books (pre-1800 publications) with catalog records were outsourced to OCLC RetroCon services and the ones without catalog records were processed by OCLC TechPro services at the minimum cataloging level. The backlog of the Marian collection (post-1800 publications) is being done at full level by the TechPro service. The OCLC Authority Control Service (ACS) has been used to update member records applicable to the rare book collection and to generate authority records for the Library’s local system. OCLC experts worked closely with the Library staff in preparation of these projects and gave helpful suggestions to ensure the outcomes. Library student assistants played a major role in the preparation of materials for OCLC and have continued with the item-linking process after the cataloging records received from OCLC were loaded to the local system. Cataloging experts used the local system’s heading reports to make the corrections that cannot be handled by the ACS. Over 77% of this rare book collection in mariology required original cataloging, i.e., they are holdings unique to the Marian Library. Records for these rare books are now available around the globe on WorldCat.
