Abstract

The University Libraries of the University of Akron (UA) has recently embraced the concept of information competence. As a result of its information competence efforts and in response to the need for an innovative approach to user instruction, the UA Libraries has begun a project to create an interactive web-based information competence tutorial. This paper discusses the concept of information literacy or information competence as it relates to student outcomes and library instruction, and explores the circumstances which led to the decision to create the tutorial, the formation of the working groups, and the first stages of the development process.
