Represent a Unique Local History

Hui-lan HUANG

Abstract

The Senta Cruz Public Libraries launched its Local History Photograph Collection project in May 2000. For the first time in history, this undertaking has made available to the general public more than 800 photographs from the 1860s to the 1990s. This article covers the early stages of the development process. Discussed are the photographs’ unique historical, economic and geographic backgrounds, as well as project funding sources, leadership, personnel and technical issues. The article calls for a further exploration in areas such as copyright and subject treatment.
