Library Minority Managers: Ways to Survive and to Succeed

Xiaoyin ZHANG

Abstract

Much has been written about cultural diversity. There has also been considerable discussion about library management. This article addresses issues that have received little attention in the literature: managerial challenges facing library minority managers, especially those who were not raised in the United States but have been hired into management positions in American libraries. The emphasis will be on the issues of management styles, communication patterns, and minority manager relationships. The article also discusses principles and strategies for dealing with these issues.

Keywords: academic library; management; cross-cultural studies
