Supervising the Problem Librarian

Art A. LICHTENSTEIN

Abstract

The literature of library management contains a substantial amount of discussion regarding techniques through which managers may work productively with librarians whose performance needs improvements. That is, librarians whose skills are either minimally acceptable or slightly below standard. These techniques include goal setting, coaching, mentoring, time management, positive reinforcement, etc. However, there is little material in the literature that addresses the problem of how to effectively manage a librarian whose performance is far below the acceptable standard, someone whose chronic behavior may be consistently described as “dysfunctional”. This article describes the experience of a typical library manager when faced with the task of supervising a clearly dysfunctional librarian.
