Ho-Chin CHEN & Hsiao-Hui CHANG

Abstract

The growth of WWW has led to a rapid development of electronic commerce. The transmission of data relating to serial subscriptions has resulted in a heavy burden for libraries, publishers, and subscription vendors. To ease the burden, serial standards are becoming even more important in this digital age. ONIX for Serials, a serial standard co-developed by EDItEUR and NISO, is one of the many varieties of serial standards. ONIX for Serials is a standard format for communicating information pertaining to libraries’ subscriptions to serial titles and related products and services. For ONIX for Serials to be an identification number, ISSN needed revision, which is undertaken by the ISO/TC 46/SC 9 Working Group 5. The origin, current status, and future development of ONIX for Serials are summarized in this paper.
