PEPARING ACADEMIC RESEARCH LIBRARIANS TODAY: THE LIBRARY ASSOCIATE PROGRAM AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

Paula Storm and Wei Wei

Abstract
The skills needed by academic librarians have multiplied during the past decade A one-year master's degree program may not be able to adequately prepare the student for an entry-level position in a university library. The Library Associate Program at the University of Michigan is a two-year program that incorporates both a 48 hour credit academic component and a halftime position in the University Libraries. Results of the survey conducted and described in this article indicate that not only are the graduates well prepared for a professional position but starting salaries are higher than for graduates of the traditional M.I.L.S. program.
