EDUCATING REFERENCE LIBRARIANS: HOW LIBRARY SCHOOLS ARE ADAPTING TO REVOLUTIONARY CHANGES IN INFORMATION SOURCES AND SERVICES

A. McCrossan and D. Smith

Abstract
The reference/information area of library work has gone through enormous changes during the last 10 years even during the last two or three years. New developments in technology have literally revolutionized the delivery of information science provided by libraries. How are schools of library and information science (referred to below as "library schools" or simply as "schools") keeping up with these changes in order to prepare new librarians for the demands they will meet their first professional jobs? What about continuing education? What are schools doing to meet the needs of experienced librarians who need to update their knowledge and skills?

In order to find some answers to these and related questions, the writers examined catalogs of library schools and also surveyed a sample of schools of different sizes located in different parts of the United States.
