THE ROLE OF THE LIBRARY IN THE PROPOSED ADAPTATION OF AUDIO-VISUAL AIDS TO TEACHING GENERAL STUDIES IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES

J.O. Omoniyi

Abstract
For effective teaching and learning process to take place, there is the need for equally suitable and efficient medium of communication between the teacher and students. In the advanced countries, the use of AV materials as teaching aids in the classroom is a long tradition. This is in sharp contrast with the developing nations like Nigeria where there is still a wide notion that AV resources are made to be used only in social gatherings or as a source of re axation and aesthetics in the homes. Thus, to a very large extent, the use of AV media as teaching aids is yet to be popularised among university lecturers in Nigeria except in specialized disciplines like medical sciences, educational technology etc. which require occasional use of a few AV resources. The purpose of this paper is therefore three fold: 1. to enumerate the varieties of AV teaching aids that are available in the university library; 2. to expose the GST lecturers to the utility values of the materials; 3. to sensitize the GST lecturers on the library as an alternative access to AV teaching aids.
Keywords: Nigeria, AV resources, AV media-teaching aids
