An Investigation of Adult Children's Relationship with Their Parents Living in the Same Household

Abstract
The relationship between adult children and their parents is a major topic in adult development. Due to the social and cultural differences, the relationships may differ from culture to culture. The present research is an attempt to investigate the adult children's relationship with their parents living in the same household.

The subjects are parents of 221 three (or multi)-generation extended family from urban and rural Taipei. The self constructed questionnaire was presented. The results showed that 88.6% of the adult sons were living with their parents since they wore born, while 83.7% of the daughter-in-law were living with their parents-in-law since they were married ; most parents felt happy about living with their parents and concerned the mutual care and help was the major effect to their live; they felt that the relationship with their parents were harmony; living with their parents also affected their children (the grandparents' grandchildren); most parents thought that Living with parents was an ideal family situation; most of them would live together if they had a choice.

The findings also showed that the adult children's age toward living with their parents did affect their live, their children and their thought about three-generation extended family, while the parents' education toward living with their parents only affect their children.
