The Development of the Concept of Authority among Young Children in Taiwan

Chu-Ying CHIEN

Abstract
The development of the concept of authority among Taiwan's young children was examined by using Damon's "Authority Interview". In this study, 96 children from ages 4 to 9 were included. After statistical analysis of the results of this research, it shows there is a significant age trend but no significant gender difference at levels in the development of the concept of authority. In addition to the above quantitative analysis, a qualitative analysis of children's reason to obey their parents and peers' authority was also included in this study.

Based upon the findings, ten suggestions for further research in moral and authority education are proposed. Hopefully, these suggestions could benefit the development of moral curriculum and its teaching. The results of this study could also be a useful reference for future research in the development of a authority concept.
