Teaching Chinese Characters: What to Teach? How to Teach? (Article written in chinese)

BIAN Juefei

Abstract

Teaching Chinese characters to foreign learners is a part of TCSL and refers exclusively to teaching the meanings of individual modern Chinese words. It is conducted in the way universally employed in teaching foreign languages with a view to helping cultivate in the learners the ability to use Chinese words and expressions correctly. The basic purpose of teaching Chinese characters to foreign learners is to explain to them the shape, pronunciation and meaning of individual characters so that they can learn quickly to read and write, and master to a certain degree the written Chinese language. True enough, it is almost impossible to teach Chinese characters without touching upon Chinese culture, but teaching Chinese characters is not teaching Chinese culture after all. To teach Chinese characters is just teach Chinese characters.
