An Analysis of an Investigation of CSL Learners’ Pragmatic Competence (Article written in chinese)

LIU Songhao & TIAN Junjie

Abstract

The paper analyses the findings of an inquiry into the pragmatic competence of CSL (Chinese as a Second Language) learners at Peking University. 76 students took part in the questionnaire study, some of whom were also interviewed. Results show that (a) learners’ performance is relatively satisfying, and (b) their pragmatic failures reveal the weak points of our teaching practice. Ways in which students may be helped to acquire pragmatic competence are discussed. Taking politeness phenomenon as an example, the authors emphasize that for a CSL student, the methods of how to express him/herself politely are of primary importance.
