ZHOU Lieting

Abstract

Spoken in a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual society, Singapore Mandarin has been under constant influence from both Chinese Southern dialects and English, thus developed many traits different from Putonghua spoken in Mainland China. This paper takes six words that are commonly used in both Singapore and China as examples, and differentiates subtle discrepancies in their meanings and usage between the two variants of Mandarin.
