The Function of Language and the Possible Norms (Article written in chinese)

DAI Zhaoming

Abstract

Possible norms signify the variants of usage that appear during the course of expression and communication of a language. Though different from the accepted set norms and their “correctness” is still under suspicion, possible norms have shown vitality in daily life. They are realistic and have adaptability in function, acceptability for creativeness and originality and also a tendency of assimilating new elements. The conception of possible norms further expounds the principles and methodology for the dynamic theory of normative linguistics. Possible norms, together with some other conceptions put forward so far by the author, constitute the basic conceptions of normative linguistics and contribute to avoiding errors in normalization.
