Verb-Object Analogy and Its Normalization (Article written in chinese)

WU Xigen

Abstract

This paper, based upon the analysis of abundant language data, detects three types of V-O analogical patterns which have come into being in recent years: Vi + Locative (e.g. 亮相榕城),Vi + Benefactive(e.g. 接軌浦東)and Adj + patient(e.g. 健康民眾). Having analyzed the causes of the appearance of these new patterns, the paper holds that these patterns, so often used in contexts such as article titles, ads, slogans, song words and poems, etc., have their own independent pragmatic functions which foreground the expressions better than their correspondent patterns. The paper explores their normality and application, and finds it practicable to regard them as expressions in their transition from non-standard to standard. Therefore, in language teaching, more attention should be paid to the analysis of their contexts and function, instead of committing oneself to a simple negative or assertive attitude to these patterns. In addition, the same prudent steps have to be taken in dictionary compilation so as to adopt a new pattern once it is widely accepted.
