Aspects of Western Sociolinguistics (Article written in chinese)

ZHOU Qingsheng

Abstract

This article gives a brief introduction to western sociolinguistics, including its beginning and development, its scope and objectives, its branches or schools, influential works and writers, collections and anthologies, a major argument of theories, and its future directions. Essential branches or theories are composed of ethnomethodology, Bernstein’s code theories, the sociology of language, the ethnography of speaking, discourse analysis, the social psychology of language, urban dialectology, social network theory and identity theory. Integrationalism, the article suggests, will come to be the general trend in the development of theoretical sociolinguistics, although, in the days to come, the theoretical patterns of pluralism and diversity will be presented in the field, and both segregationalism and integrationalism will develop their own theories and approaches.
