Abstract
The Chinese character“半”is a rather special numeral. The study of“半”has seldom been followed with interest in academic circles. Starting with the multi-bearings such as grammar, pragmatics, semantics, etymology and culture, this article tries to get a concise picture and new understanding of the numeral“半”in the field of cultural philology. The full text falls roughly into two parts: the first half, from the angle of language, mainly advances different ideas on determining the part of speech of“半”; the second half, from the cultural perspective, deals with some interesting phenomena in ancient and modern times on the“半”culture.
