Teaching Discourse Skills through Grammar Lessons in TCSOL (Article written in chinese)

PENG Xiaochuan

Abstract

The enhancement of learners’ ability in cohesive expression at discourse level is systematically attained in the process of TCSOL (Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages). We believe that grammar lessons should play an indispensable role in this attainment. With this in mind, we carried out an experiment with intermediate level students by weighting discourse-skills teaching above one third of the total instruction hours in grammar lessons. It has been found that discourse skills can be effectively developed through grammar lessons at three stages.
