Abstract
Social phraseology refers to the words and phrases frequently and widely used by the public, on all kinds of public occasions, with their social communicative functions. It can be categorized into different divisions according to the places and media where it appears, the public it concerns, the forms it takes and the communicative tasks it fulfils. It is thus a complicated concept to elaborate on and to separate it from non-social phraseology proves a hard job. However, the key features of social phraseology are clear-cut. This article discusses explicitly the main features of social phraseology, along with a host of lively examples. The six basic features of social phraseology are: publicity, utility, multi-valence, productivity, creativity, and conciseness.
