Comments on the Deficiencies in Revised Edition of Modern Chinese Dictionary (Article written in chinese)

ZENG Zifan

Abstract

Modern Chinese Dictionary and its Supplements are authoritative among the contemporary Chinese dictionaries. 1996 Revised Edition will certainly contribute to the promotion of Putonghua, enhance the standardization of Chinese and advance the teaching of Chinese.

However, there are deficiencies in the 1996 Revised Edition in handling colloquialism, dialectical words, the original forms and different forms of Chinese characters, entries, explaining the meanings of words, and marking phonetic symbols. It is necessary for the 1996 Revised Edition to follow good advice and continue to make revisions. What is more, 1996 Revised Edition and its Supplements should combine into one-volume to benefit the readers. A New Revision of 1996 Revised Edition should be based on not only the Northern Dialect areas but also take into account the needs of readers in other dialectal areas, as well as readers in Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas.
