HE Ziran & WU Dongying

Abstract

The paper explores and discusses universals as well as particulars in the phenomena of language variation and change between Hong Kong and inland China in the last twenty years. The universal patterns found as existing across Hong Kong and inland China language variation and change are in the process of new word creation and the process of loan word indigenization. Particulars found across the two regions are mostly in the products of word creation and of borrowing as well. Finally, suggestions for further research on language variation and change in greater China are given and implications for future work in language standardization in China are also presented.
