Abstract
The proficiency test of Putonghua aims at evaluating the candidates’ mastery of pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and practical use of Putonghua, with pronunciation being the key component. In view of the problems in distinguishing between right and wrong pronunciation, this paper makes a preliminary study on how to apply the norms of pronunciation in the test, how to deal with pronunciation defects, and how to set up norms on the standardized pronunciation of certain words which have been divergent due to phonetic variation.
