Theoretical Considerations and Survey of Studies of Word Order in Chinese (Article written in chinese)

RONG Jing

Abstract

This paper, based on a summary of the existing researches on Chinese word order, examines more than 2,000 bivalent modern Chinese verbs. By analyzing the relevant sentence patterns using these verbs, it reveals the basic semantic principles for word order and the changes of word order, and makes quantitative analysis of the word order of sentences in discourse. The study indicates that sentences in isolation are remarkably different from those in discourse and points out that if it is based on sentences in isolation, the study of Chinese grammar will see limitations, as Chinese is a topic prominent language.

Keywords: word order; semantic principle; subject; topic chain
