An Important Basic Project for Linguistic Studies — Review of Phonetic Database of Modern Chinese Dialects (Article written in chinese)

CHEN Zhangtai

Abstract

Phonetic Database of Modern Chinese Dialects (Hou Jingyi ed.) has, in the form of tape recording, made accurate record and meticulous description of the general appearance and major features of dialects of over 40 places and thus it provides the linguistic circle with valuable audible and perceivable data. It is therefore of great importance to language use and research and other relevant fields. It is a quality academic work with distinctive features and of practical value. Nevertheless, there are certain aspects that need further discussion in the work, such as the principle for selecting places to do the recording, some of the chosen places in particular and the content and material used.
