Abstract
By giving a general description and discussion of the conditioning effect of context at various linguistic levels, this paper specifies contexts comprehensiveness and universality in its conditioning effect on language. Conditioning is the fundamental function of context. Four basic manifestations of the conditioning function of context are discussed in the paper.
