Abstract
After an investigation of the fronting of the affricate consonants tφ, tφ’ and φ by people in Beijing and Shijiazhuang and Zhuozhou of Hebei, the author has found: (1) The fronting phenomenon occurs rather extensively, not only among young women of Beijing as expected; (2) It seems that the first year of junior middle schools is the “turning period” when the fronting first occurs; (3) The fronting is relevant to the way of articulation and speech speed; and (4) In terms of frequency of occurrence, the fronting of the palatal fricative φ comes the first, that of the aspirated tφ’ the second and that of the unaspirated tφ the third.
