The Chaozhou-Shantou Dialect and the Evolution of Chaozhou Operas (Article written in chinese)

LIN Lunlun

Abstract

Based on a quantitative analysis of the Chaozhou-Shantou dialectal vocabulary and rhymes used in Five Chaozhou Operas of the Late Ming Dynasty, this paper holds that the steady increase of dialectal words that are used in the rhymes of the librettos of these operas reflect the historical process of evolution of the Chaozhou opera from the Southern opera. It is the author’s opinion that Jincha Ji, included in Five Chaozhou Operas of the Late Ming Dynasty, was but the acting version of a Southern opera performance, and only Li Jing Ji can be regarded as of a Chaozhou opera script in the real sense.

Keywords: southern opera; playscript of chaozhou opera; chaoshan dialect
