Abstract
This paper examines the treatment of heterographs in the second edition of Modern Chinese Dictionary (MCD) by analyzing the three methods illustrated in the Guide to the Use of MCD, proposes two other methods different from those in MCD, offers a comparative discussion of the developments and merits/drawbacks of the different methods by comparing them with the third edition of MCD, and concludes that in the ongoing sorting-out of heterographs, the urgent problem to be solved is to set clear criteria for identifying heterographs, to work out strict principles for standardizing heterographs and to encourage a multi-methodological approach to heterographic standardization.
