Abstract
The paper concerns two issues: modernization and education of Chinese language and writing. Theoretically, language education includes three aspects: A) Language. B) Use of Language. C) The culture that language bears. The main purpose of language education in the last one hundred years is engaged in solving the problem of A and C. The author points out four defects in language education: A) No enough emphasis on oral language. B) No systematic methodology on teaching of the use of language. C) Cultural influence on language education has not been sufficiently considered. D) More importance has been attached to language knowledge than language ability.
