Preliminaries on the Principles on Literate Standard of Toponym Standardization (Article written in Chinese)

LI Yunfu

Abstract

Toponym standardization should meet both political and literate standards. Literate standard of toponym indicates that the word meanings, character selection and term pronunciations should conform to the rules and norms of Chinese language and characters. Based on “the examination and approval movement for selecting characters and pronunciations of national region names”, the paper discusses the essence, content and characteristics of literate standard of toponym and then illustrates its six principles, including theorization, distinguishability, consistence, normalization, concision and habitualness.

Keywords: toponym standardization; literate standard; selecting characters and pronunciation; principle
