A Pragmatic Case Study of the verb ·d in Contemporary Chinese (Article written in Chinese)

Abstract

·d is a polysemous verb in contemporary Chinese. Through the angle of pragmatics, this article focuses on its using frequency, semantic meanings, and dialectal features. The author believes that ·d appears in modern written Chinese text at no later than the end of Qing dynasty and has become a high frequency word since about 1950s. The semantic meanings of ·d are varied and complex, and they are used mainly orally and derogatively. With the frequent use of ·d in common language, its dialectal features are faded.
