Abstract
Intense arguments have arisen on the phonetic notation and pinyin spelling of quadrisyllabic idioms. As a standard dictionary of language and writing, Contemporary Chinese Dictionary (Xiandai Hanyu Cidian) shows some distinctive features in notating the pinyin of the quadrisyllabic idioms, paying much attention to the features as residue of Archaic Chinese in the constitutive elements of the idioms and notating them word by word. This article offers an analysis of the word-by-word notating practice in this dictionary using a quantitative approach, managing to indicate its shortcomings in this respect so that this already high-quality dictionary could be further improved.
