On the Acceptance of Lettered Words in Contemporary Chinese (Article written in Chinese)

LI Ming

Abstract

The emergence of lettered words in contemporary Chinese is a new phenomenon of word formation. This paper offers an explanation of this phenomenon in the following two aspects: 1) The foreignness of their written form and pronunciation does not stop the lettered words from becoming an integral part of the Chinese lexicon; 2) The current status quo of the actual use of Chinese prove that such expressions as CD, VCD, MTV and WTO have already found their way to the modern Chinese lexicon.

Keywords: lettered words; written form; pronunciation; the current status quo of the actual use of Chinese
