An Examination and Analysis of the Simplification of Chinese Characters by Analogy (Article written in Chinese)

ZHANG Qiong

Abstract

How can we make corresponding adjustment to the section of simplified characters in the Table of Normalized Chinese Characters? Is it possible to simplify all the traditional complex forms of simplified Chinese characters? Using the second edition of the Table of Normalized Chinese Characters, we have simplified exhaustively all the traditional complex forms of Chinese characters which are eligible for simplification by analogy among the 54678 words in Hanyu Da Zidian (The Grand Dictionary of Chinese Characters), creating 12818 new simplified character forms. This article analyzes the existing problems and difficulties encountered in this attempt of exhaustive simplification and points out that it is neither necessary nor possible to do so.

Keywords: simplify by analogy; the traditional complex forms of simplified Chinese characters; simplified Chinese characters; Hanyu Da Zidian (The Grand Dictionary of Chinese Characters)
