A Quantitative Study on the Lexical Affinity Among 5 Wu Dialects (Article written in Chinese)

Abstract

Based on a brief survey of quantitative study of Wu dialects, this paper presents a new approach that focuses on the morphemic and phonetic similarity, and applies the approach to study on lexical affinity of 784 words from 5 representative Wu dialects: Shanghai, Linhai, Wenzhou, Quzhou and Jinhua. This study also considers the number of words and word frequency. This paper also provides qualitative explanations to the quantitative data. It finds that lexical change has its salient features.
