Abstract

The r-ending finals which form retroflexing or r-coloring words, is a part of phonological system of putonghua (´¶³q¸Ü). We call it erhua (¨à¤Æ) in modern Chinese phonology. There are at least three functions for r-ending/r-coloring words: 1) to show diminutive or the pet-name for someone or something; 2) to differentiate the part of speech, while the rending is normally a noun suffix; 3) to show the colloquial style. As for the second function of r-coloring words, it seems not sufficiently recognized yet. As for the third function of r-coloring words, to express the colloquial style of speech, although the public have already learned through practice, but we still need more material for people to master. This paper would like to meet the requirement of students for such topic. For easy to learn the r-coloring words, this paper makes new inductions.
