Abstract
The present research was a survey on the character acquisition for western CSL (Chinese as a second language) beginners and the correlation between the character acquisition and the productivity of characters in forming words. It was found that: 1) after two-months studying, the western CSL beginners had acquired averagely 394 characters in naming and 360 characters in knowing; 2) the correlation between naming and knowing were significant; 3) the acquisition of characters was significantly correlated to the productivity of characters in forming words in learnt materials. As a character formed one word in learnt materials, 42% of such characters were acquired in naming and 37% in knowing. As a character formed two words in learnt materials, 64% of such characters were acquired in naming and 58% in knowing; as a character formed three words or more than three words, 87% of such characters were acquired in naming and 81%in knowing.
